Maraetotoara Falls clean-up: Give us a hand?

The annual spring clean of one of Hastings’ most beautiful spots is on this Saturday (September 17).

Maraetotara Falls is not only beautiful it is also very popular, and some visitors are more responsible than others when it comes to removing their rubbish, says Hastings District Council’s enhancement officer Wendy Beeke.

“We usually get about 20 people to this clean up and with that many it only takes an hour or so. We’re meeting at the middle car park on Maraetotara Rd, from 2pm. The Keep Hastings Beautiful flags will be up so you can’t miss us.”

The Maraetotara Falls clean-up is part of the national Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week, which runs from September 12 to 18.

Last year, nearly 80,000 volunteers helped clean up across New Zealand.

Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week’s central aim is to increase community participation of all kinds, but also addresses issues of sustainability, environment, health, crime and social inclusion. We work in partnership with government bodies to deliver on sustainable and environmental initiatives.

Keeping Maraetotara Falls clean is about to get a bit easier, with plans in place to install toilets and rubbish bins at the site. It will take some planning, given the remoteness of the site, however the new facilities should be in place by April next year.
