Safety and resilience improvements on State Highway 1

23 September 2016 | AUCKLAND & NORTHLAND

Safety and resilience improvements on State Highway 1 Northland

The NZ Transport Agency is starting work to improve safety and resilience on two sections of State Highway 1 on either side of Warkworth.

A new guardrail is being installed on State Highway 1 near Schollum Access Road to improve safety for motorists travelling between Puhoi and Warkworth.

The NZ Transport Agency says that widening the road and installing a new guardrail on the outside curve will help prevent vehicles hitting the bank and rolling.

Road crews will begin work on 26 September and the work is expected to take approximately four weeks.

Improvements are also due to get underway to remove potholes and make the road more resilient further north through the Dome Valley.

The work will begin on 2 October and is expected to take up to five weeks dependent on weather conditions.

Most of the work will be carried out at night between 6.30pm and 6am to minimise the impact on road users. During the day there will be some work taking place to ensure the repaired road surface isn’t damaged by passing traffic.

Work will also take place during the weekends but if the improvements are delayed by weather work will be put on hold during the busy Labour Weekend period.

“Some motorists will remember we were carrying out work in the area last year, which improved drainage to ensure the ground conditions are more durable for the road surface to be repaired,” says Tim Crow, the Agency’s Northland Safety and Performance Manager.

“The drier and warmer weather means conditions are ideal to return to these sites to complete the work we started, so you’ll start to see more of our road crews getting stuck in across Northland’s state highways.”
