Social media and press workshop well attended in Upper Hutt

A recent workshop on working with Social Media and the Press was well received by local sporting and community organisations wanting to learn more.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 27 SEP 2016—Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team and Colin Williams from the Upper Hutt Leader jointly hosted a free workshop on working with Social Media and the Press on Wednesday 7 September for sporting organisations and local community groups.

A recent survey highlighted the requirement for this workshop with 43% of responding organisations seeking help to communicate with their existing members and to attract new members to their clubs. This workshop was designed as a response to this feedback, providing the organisations with tools to market themselves more successfully to the local community.

Colin Williams, a reporter from the Upper Hutt Leader, presented on how organisations can pitch their stories to the paper in a way that is more likely to then be turned into a story that the local community will want to read.

The social media section was presented by Activation’s Marketing and Customer Engagement Team Leader, Angela Hayes. The presentation demonstrated how social media can help raise the profile of an organisation with a focus on using Facebook to build a relationship with an online audience. This was followed by an interactive workshop. The workshop helped participants to set up their own Facebook page and demonstrated how to best utilise their page.

Activation’s Club and Schools Advisor, David King was delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to local clubs. “There was strong demand from our club survey to offer organisations assistance in promoting themselves with little or no budget. This workshop was ideal for those keen to develop their club’s promotional and marketing capabilities.”

Initial feedback has been very positive, with participants expressing their appreciation of the advice on how to best promote their clubs.
