Love Food Hate Waste fund – submit your idea by Friday

On average about a quarter of all food purchased ends up in the rubbish bin, bag or compost costing householders around $500 a year in uneaten items. Auckland Council’s first ever Love Food Hate Waste Fund closes this week (Friday 30 September) so act quick to submit your idea to prevent or reduce food waste.

Need some inspiration? Auckland’s first community-led Love Food Hate Waste events ran this month:

Jess Niemak from financial literacy group Gene Now ran two Love Food Hate Waste events in Glen Innes with a money saving theme.

In partnership with local group G-FIT (Growing Financial Independence in Tamaki) Jess ran a money-saving stall. This focused on saving money in the kitchen using the Love Food Hate Waste resources.

The second event had a twist with local ladies from different cultures coming together to share their staple foods and tips. Each participant shared a recipe and told a few stories about their country and why their dish was important to their culture. Everyone had a go chopping, dicing, tasting and rolling roti while talking about how food can be used not wasted!

If you fancy running an event like this for your community make sure you get your application in for the council’s Love Food Hate Waste fund. Whether it’s running a jam making workshop, chef demonstration or scheme in a school or business don’t hesitate to apply. As long as your event or project encourages others to prevent or reduce food waste you could get support!

It is ideal for community groups, schools and individuals needing financial support for innovative food waste prevention projects or initiatives.

Suitability of ideas can be discussed with our friendly team of Wastewise advisors through wastewise@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Please note, that the fund is designed to prevent food waste, not solutions to deal with food waste already binned. Funding applications for composting and Bokashi can be made through the Waste Minimisation Innovation Fund.

Gordon Campbell: On Dune 2, And Images Of Islam

Depictions of Islam in Western popular culture have rarely been positive, even before 9/11. Five years on from the mosque shootings, this is one of the cultural headwinds that the Muslim community has to battle against. Whatever messages of tolerance and inclusion are offered in daylight, much of our culture tends to be hostile to Islam when we’re sitting in the dark, with popcorn.
Any number of movie examples come to mind, beginning with Rudolf Valentino’s role (over a century ago) as the romantic Arab hero in The Sheik...
