Upper Hutt’s Positive Ageing Week is back

Upper Hutt’s Positive Ageing Week is back

A week of activities to celebrate Upper Hutt’s mature residents has been organised by Upper Hutt City Council for Positive Ageing Week 2016.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 05 OCT 2016—Each year, Upper Hutt City Council supports Positive Ageing Week, a week dedicated to supporting the health and wellbeing of mature residents in the Upper Hutt community. This year, Positive Ageing Week is running from 10 – 17 October and Council is providing a range of fun and enjoyable activities—mostly free of charge, with a few requiring a small financial contribution.

A timetable of activities and accompanying promotional material has been posted on Council’s website: www.upperhuttcity.com/positive-ageing

One major event this year will be a pilot initiative based on developing positive and sustainable relationships between seniors, children, and young people. This year a number of local students will be collaborating with local rest homes and retirement villages and enjoying activities together.

“The Minister of Senior Citizens has identified intergenerational immersion as one of three major priorities, so it is important for Council to get behind and support this,” says Council’s Community Services Director, Mike Ryan. “We hope this initiative will be the first of many between young people and seniors in the community.”

“Good healthy communities are communities that are connected, resilient, and participatory and where people feel safe and have a sense of wellbeing and pride in their community. Support for Positive Ageing Week is part of the ongoing investment that Council makes to enrich the community fabric of Upper Hutt,” says Mr Ryan.
