Driving on Saturday? Flight Centre K2 Race Programme - How the day unfolds

Close to 1,500 riders are taking part in the Flight Centre K2 this Saturday from all over New Zealand and overseas - so avoid delays by reading below for the schedule of events throughout the day.

"It would be a great help if people would avoid unnecessary travel on the day, or avoid the roads when they are at their busiest with cyclists," says co-organiser Rita Stephenson. "But we can give you an idea where the main bunches of cyclists will be travelling throughout the day on the Coromandel."

7.45am Tairua - The first race off the blocks is the K2 Elite Men. This starts from Tairua at 7.45amon Saturday morning. It is followed by the main field of 600 riders which start in groups of 60 riders, 4 minutes apart from 8.00am through to 8.30am.

8am to 10.30am Tairua to Whitianga - These riders will be on the road between Tairua and Whitianga for the next 2 hours between 8am and 10.30am, with the first riders coming through Whitianga at around 9.00am and the last riders coming through around 10.30am.

They carry on to Coromandel and will be on Whitianga/Coromandel Road from between 9.00amin the morning through till around 1.30pm in the afternoon.

The front runners in the K2 will arrive in Coromandel at around 10.30am and will be heading over theKereta Hills to Thames. They will be joined by the K1 riders who start from Coromandel in a staggered formation between 11.45am and 12.30pm.

The Coromandel to Thames Road will be busy with cyclists from around 10.30 through till around 3.00pm in the afternoon.

The last stage of the race, Thames to Tairua, sees the start of around riders in the Nicholas Browne Challenge from 9.30am.

Expect to see riders from 9.45am on the Kopu Hikuai road.

The first of the K2 riders will arrive on the Kopu Hikuai from around 11.45am with the remaining riders in the field coming through until 5.00pm. in the afternoon.

The first riders will start arrive at the finish line in Tairua from around 11:15 am onwards.
