Horowhenua Youth Voice recruitment underway

Horowhenua Youth Voice recruitment underway

The Horowhenua Youth Council is seeking new members for 2017.

The Youth Council, also known as Youth Voice, consists of approximately 12 representatives, aged from 13 to 19 years of age.

Their role is to identify and help solve issues that affect young people, through Horowhenua District Council’s Youth Action Plan.

Youth and Community Service Centre Manager Garreth Stevens says members gain valuable skills by participating in team-building exercises, event management, volunteering for community group projects and fundraising, as well as gaining a valuable insight into governance.

"We are looking for young people who are passionate about Horowhenua and want to make an impact on behalf of their generation, inside and outside of the local government setting,” he said.

“Youth Voice gives our young people a channel to express their needs and share their vision for Horowhenua.”

Mr Stevens said that Youth Voice provides the “ultimate youth consulting group”.

“This year they presented the 2016 – 2019 Youth Action Plan to Council and received a standing ovation. They had led this project for the 12 months prior,” he said.

“In return they go through huge growth in civic leadership, public speaking and a whole range of other skills.”

Successful Youth Voice candidates will be offered a place in Horowhenua’s Civil Defence Leadership Camp, known as ‘Project Resilience’, to take place at the Makahika Outdoor Pursuits Centre in March. The project, funded by Ministry of Youth Development, will develop skills in both leadership and emergency preparedness.

Youth Voice applications are now open and close at 5pm on Friday 17 February 2017.

Application forms are available on the Youth Voice page of Council’s website: www.horowhenua.govt.nz/youthvoice as well as from Council service centres, Te Takere the district libraries in Foxton and Shannon, and the offices at local colleges.
