By-election called for subdivision of the Howick Local Board

17 November 2016
By-election called for Botany subdivision of the Howick Local Board

A by-election is to be held to elect a new representative for the Botany subdivision on the Howick Local Board to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Lucy Schwaner at the board’s inaugural meeting.

Ms Schwaner resigned less than a month on from the local body elections after losing the vote for the Local Board’s chairmanship to David Collings by 5 votes to 4.

Following a resignation there is no alternative under the Local Electoral Act but to run a by-election. The estimated cost of the by-election is expected to be over $100,000.

Candidate nominations open on Thursday 24 November and close at noon on Thursday 22 December 2016.
A candidate seeking nomination needs to be:
· Over the age of 18
· A New Zealand citizen registered on the electoral roll
· Have two electors enrolled in the Botany subdivision nominate him or her.

Each nomination must be accompanied by a $200 GST inclusive deposit.
For further information on standing as a candidate, visit aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/elections or contact the Auckland Council Electoral Office on 09-973-5212.
Voting documents will be posted to Botany subdivision’s 37,000 eligible voters from Thursday 26 January 2017, with the ballot closing at noon on Friday 17 February 2017.
