Bold new layout planned for Upper Hutt Central Library

Upper Hutt Central Library’s interior layout will be reconfigured early in the new year.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 17 NOV 2016—Upper Hutt City Library Manager, Marion Read has announced a redesign of the Central Library’s interior layout. The aim is to create an even more welcoming, comfortable, and easy-to-use space for Library customers.

A main area of change will be the way in which the adult fiction is shelved and arranged. This collection will be housed on new lower-level shelving with more space for displaying featured books. The new layout will also be more open and varied, facilitating discovery and improving customer awareness of the variety of titles available.

Another key transformation will be the rearrangement of the Library’s reading and activity spaces. The Children’s and Teens’ zone will be swapped with the Rotary Lounge.

“Moving the Children’s and Teens’ zone into what is currently the Rotary Lounge will provide a more open and well-lit location for users of these services,” explains Mrs Read. “It will improve visibility, safety, and connectedness with other parts of the Library. At the same time, moving the Rotary Lounge into the present Children’s and Teens’ zone will create a larger, more flexible community space. In the new lounge space there is a section that can be walled off as required for activities, leaving the large area at the front along the windows as an ideal space for customers wanting to quietly read or study.”

There will also be changes to the location and layout of our public computer zone, and the large print and audio books will be moved to a quieter and more relaxed area.

In order to implement these changes the Central Library will be closed from Tuesday 24 to Sunday 29 January 2017.

“We’re really excited by the coming improvements to the Library,” says Mrs Read. “We believe the redesign will create a more attractive, efficient and comfortable environment for Library users. We’re looking forward to their reaction when we reopen on Monday 30 January 2017.”
