Worker safety paramount in post-quake investigations

Worker safety paramount in Wellington post-quake investigations

The Public Service Association Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi is welcoming an investigation into the serious damage sustained at Statistics House in Wellington.

The Ministry of Building, Employment and Innovation will conduct a technical investigation which will look at how Statistics House performed in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Sunday night.

MBIE says the findings will help improve building design and regulation.
"The PSA is pleased at MBIE’s commitment to learn every lesson possible from this earthquake," PSA National Secretary Erin Polaczuk says.

"Statistics House was severely damaged during Sunday night’s quake, and we shudder to think what would have happened had it happened during work hours.

"Like all New Zealanders, our members deserve to feel safe at work, and the ability of buildings to withstand an earthquake of this size is a crucial part of that.

"We will offer whatever assistance investigators need."
