Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (CDEM) are asking for people to NOT donate goods at this stage, instead donate to one of the relief funds set up such as the Red Cross Appeal.
“It’s great to hear so many generous offers of support from individuals and groups around New Zealand. But for now, people are being asked not to donate goods," says Thames Valley Civil Defence Controller, Garry Towler.
“Relief funds have been set up, including the Red Cross Appeal and donating money to these is a good way to show your support. You can also help by checking on your family, neighbours and anyone who might be feeling isolated across the country. Continue to support each other and ask for help if you need it.”
Many of the affected areas are still isolated and there are significant logistical issues around transport, storage and distribution of goods which can adversely impact the response effort.
The following agencies have set up relief funds:
NZ Red Cross
Kaikoura District Council EQ Relief
Fund
