White Ribbon Day Community Event Cathedral Square

White Ribbon Day Community Event Cathedral Square

24 th November 2016

In support of White Ribbon Day, the Christchurch community will attend a family friendly event 5pm tomorrow, Friday 25 th November, in Cathedral Square.

Co-ordinated in partnership between the Ministry of Social Development, the Christchurch Police, and the Canterbury Family Violence Collaboration, the Christchurch White Ribbon Day event will be attended by the White Ribbon Riders, SPCA and key local speakers. Limited Service Volunteers will perform a live Haka.

Barbecued sausages, face painting, Giant Jenga and pony hugging are just some of the free activities available to families attending.

Key themes will focus on Respectful Relationships, Respectful Sexual Relationships, and Consent.

SPCA educators will bring along their dogs in support of the link between respect for animals and respect for humans.

Family Violence has remained a significant social problem for the Canterbury community with 10,108 family violence investigations undertaken by the Canterbury Police in 2014-15. 8,706 of those were in Christchurch metro. Research suggests that only 20% of family violence is reported to Police, equating to one incident every ten minutes in our community. White Ribbon Day is about raising awareness, challenging attitudes and behaviours, and supporting change for families.
