Plans to extend Quay St Cycleway

Auckland Transport media release

1 December 2016

Plans to extend Quay St Cycleway

Plans have been revealed for the extension of Quay St Cycleway along Auckland’s waterfront. The two way on-road cycleway, Auckland’s busiest cycle route, will continue east past Vector Arena to 200 metres west of The Strand. Construction will begin in February 2017 and be complete by the middle of the year.

It will provide the rapidly growing number of people cycling in from east Auckland with more space and improved safety says Kathryn King AT, Cycling, Walking and Safety manager.

“Quay St Cycleway has proved popular because it keeps people walking, cycling and general traffic all separate, particularly around the busy ferry terminal.

“It makes the waterfront a safer and more inviting place by providing people on bikes with physical protection from general traffic. It is another great step towards making the city centre more bike and pedestrian friendly.”

Almost 100,000 trips have been made on the Quay St Cycleway since it was opened in July. The cycle route into the city via Tamaki Dr and Quay St has more trips per day than other popular routes like the pink Lightpath - Te Ara I Whiti and Northwestern Cycleway.

This project is part of a wider initiative to make it easier to cycle into the city centre along Tamaki Dr. Public consultation on the next phase of the project, extending the cycleway to Ngapipi Rd and connecting with Glen Innes to Tamaki Dr Shared Path, is expected to start in early 2017.

Auckland Transport is working with project partners Auckland Council and the Government through the NZ Transport Agency and the Urban Cycleways Programme on a $200m programme of cycle improvements from 2015 to 2018.
