Police appeal over possible missing kayakers

Police appeal over possible missing kayakers

On Thursday evening, Waikato Police and Whitianga Coastguard were alerted to the possibility of two kayakers missing off Hahei Beach, in the vicinity of Mahurangi Island (Goat Island).

Police were told a man and a woman had left Hahei Beach on a tandem, sit-on kayak, at about 6pm, and were last seen offshore around sunset.

They were thought to only have one paddle between them.

Flashing lights were later seen offshore, in the direction of Mahurangi Island (Goat Island).

A search of the area by two coastguard crews, Westpac Rescue helicopter, and local Police failed to locate anyone requiring assistance, and no-one has yet been reported overdue.

Police would like to speak with anyone who was kayaking in the Hahei Beach area around 6pm last night, or anyone who saw the couple around that time, before or after.

At this stage, Police have suspended a possible search, pending further information coming to hand.

Anyone with information about any sightings of the kayakers can contact Waikato District Police on 07 8586200.
