Takapuna Paid Parking Zone about to start

Following public consultation earlier this year, Auckland Transport will be replacing the existing restricted paid parking system in Takapuna with a new unrestricted paid parking system from the middle of this month.

Time limits will be removed and demand will be managed through price, meaning visitors will have flexibility on how long they can stay.

Parking charges will be $1 per hour for the first two hours, rising to $2 for any subsequent hour. In addition a 10-minute grace period will allow for pick-ups and drop-offs without needing to pay. Parking on Sundays and public holidays will be free and new electronic payment methods, including mobile apps, will also be introduced, making it easier to pay for and top up parking as needed.

Andrew Allen, Auckland Transport Chief Transport Operations Officer says "The objective of the Takapuna Parking Zone is to improve access and increase visitor numbers by ensuring on-street parking is available to use and more customer friendly. Parking is part of the transport mix in the city along with public transport and active transport use.

"Time limits will be removed with vehicle turnover encouraged through the use of demand responsive pricing and a graduated tariff. People will have flexibility on how long they stay and there will be a reduced chance of receiving a parking ticket.

"A ten minute "grace period" will be introduced which will allow the removal of some short stay parking restrictions as people will be able to stop anywhere for up to ten minutes before payment is required. This is a customer friendly option allowing quick pick-ups and drop offs and extends parking options for the likes of couriers and delivery companies", says Mr Allen.

Auckland Transport also believes that the flexible demand-based approach will encourage vehicle turnover in car parks. The parking demand and occupancy levels will be monitored by Auckland Transport and should further management be required, the tariffs will be adjusted, in accordance to AT Parking Strategy. .
