Statement from Supt Sue Schwalger, Central District Commander

Statement read at 3pm media conference today by Supt Sue Schwalger

As you will know we are mourning the death today of Sergeant Mike Toon, a much respected police officer here in Central District and a loving father.

Mike’s body was recovered from the Manawatu River at 9.30 this morning by members of the Police National Dive Team.

Mike had been missing since last night.

He’d gone into the river to help his daughter, who was trying to rescue their family dog from the water.

His acted with the courage and dedication which are characteristic of both a police officer and a father.

I have been with Mike’s family today, and our hearts are with them at this tragic time.

We, and the wider police family, will provide Mike’s family with the support they need.

Mike celebrated 28 years of service to police last year, and he formed many close friendships and relationships during this time.

Some of his colleagues have had the very difficult task of being part of the rescue and recovery operation since last night.

I commend their professionalism, and that of all the responders involved, during this tragic event.

Police will fully support his fellow officers and staff, and have offered welfare assistance.

Mike was a respected officer in the Police Prosecution Service.

He has been described as “Professional, sensitive and patient in his management of prosecution cases”

He has also been described as “A generous man with his time and infectious personality.

He was a loving family man and a man who would give you the shirt of his back and always had time to help others.”

You may also be aware that Judge Lance Rowe paid tribute to Mike in court here in Palmerston North this morning.

Those comments are much appreciated and I would like to thank Judge Rowe for his condolences.

I would also again thank all our emergency and response partners who were part of the search in such tragic circumstances.

Finally we must allow time for Mike’s family, friends and colleagues to grieve, and we ask that they be allowed to do this in private at this tragic time.
