Sunny in many places for the first weekend of Summer

Most people saw some sunshine on the first Saturday of Summer, and many will see more during Sunday. The north and east of the North Island are already basking in sunshine, and cloud over the South Island is clearing up. However, in the southwest of the North Island, the cloud should hang around today and into tomorrow morning, with patches of drizzle. The sunshine will be intermittent this afternoon in Bay of Plenty and Taupo as a few showers pop up in these regions.

On Monday, any areas of morning cloud and patchy drizzle in the South Island should clear up, leading to a mostly fine day. The North Island will also see some sunny breaks, but showers are expected to pop up across the Island as the day heats up.

“Onshore sea breezes are expected around the North Island tomorrow. As the day heats up, these sea breezes converge. Warm, rising air lifted by the convergence will cause showers across the North Island on Monday,” explained MetService Meteorologist Claire Flynn. “Some of the showers will be heavy, particularly inland, and thunderstorms are likely for inland Bay of Plenty, Taupo and Taihape, as well as the ranges of Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.”
