The 100,000 mark is reached on Quay St

Marcelo Portalet was one of almost 1000 people cycling on Quay St Cycleway yesterday on the day of the 100,000th trip on the cycleway.

The 100,000 mark was reached less than five months after the cycleway was opened on 8 July. It has a daily count of 670 cyclists, weekends are busier than weekdays, the busiest day was Saturday 8 October when 1,138 trips were made.

Marcelo, originally from Brazil, lives in the city centre and was out on a bike around the waterfront out towards the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Mike Atkinson who was on an Auckland Transport cycle training course with wife Lynda at the time, made the 100,000th trip at 11.21am on Sunday. The couple live in Mt Eden and plan to start cycling to work in the city centre instead of driving.

Plans have been recently been announced to extend Quay St Cycleway towards Tamaki Dr says Kathryn King, AT, Cycling, Walking and Safety manager.

“This is Auckland’s busiest cycle route and there is a growing number of people who are choosing to cycle along the waterfront to get to work, study or for recreation.”

Auckland Transport is working with project partners Auckland Council and the Government through the NZ Transport Agency and the Urban Cycleways Programme on a $200m programme of cycle improvements from 2015 to 2018.
