Call for Free Parking to continue in Hastings City Centre
The Hastings City Business Association has just completed a survey of shoppers in the CBD asking them their views on the Free Parking Trial. Susan McDade General Manager of the HCBA says “We were overwhelmed with the positive response from the people on the streets towards this pilot initiative”. Over 350 respondents answered questions with 99% stating Free Parking makes shopping more convenient in town. “The survey really just backs up what we are hearing from the community every day but getting all of the comments is helpful as well. We don’t just want Free Parking to continue we need it to.” she says.
There is no doubt the popular Free Parking trial has been a boon to retailers over the last year contributing to record retail spending figures and an increased amount of activity in town. Business owners have reported increases in almost every sector which is supported by the retail statistic quarterly reports. While it is not the only factor giving our CBD a boost it has definitely made a difference.
As the city comes to life again the need for more parking options is being felt, especially long term parking for workers in town. Ms. McDade says “As part of building a city for the future we need to address these stress points now before they handbrake our momentum.” With the focus of the Hastings District Council of revitalisation of the city centre the topic of parking will most likely be a key topic for discussion around the table.
