Whangaparaoa residents open their festive houses

Whangaparaoa residents open their festive houses for Christmas to support local hospice

For some, decking the halls with boughs of holly and spending time untangling fairy lights is all part and parcel of bringing the family together to celebrate the festive season.

But for Margret Donelley and her friends at Kensington Park, Orewa, their hours spent covered in tinsel will be for the worthy cause of the Hibiscus Hospice.

On Saturday 10 December between 2pm and 6pm, the Parade of Homes at Kensington Park will be open to the public to come along and marvel at eight Christmas decorated homes and enjoy the live entertainment in the park.

All proceeds will go to the Hibiscus Hospice who will be providing specialist care, comfort and support for anyone affected by life limiting illness this Christmas.

One of the homes on display will be Mrs Donelley’s and for her it’s personal.

“When I had my breast tumour removed, the Hospice volunteers took me to my radiation each day for three weeks so it’s only fitting that I give a little back after all they’ve done for me,” she says.

“I started decorating my place last week and I’ve already got glitter from here to Africa so that will be the most challenging part – the clean-up,” Mrs Donelley says.

“And there’s no doubt I’ll be spending a full day on the Christmas tree to get it just right – see I’m a fussy lady and it’s for a fantastic cause” she laughs.

Volunteer gardener for Hospice and resident at Kensington Park Mrs Insull also shares her willingness to be involved.

“The Hospice have cared for many of our close friends so it’s fantastic that we can give back to such a hard-working charity that do a lot of good for our community,” she says.

The afternoon will be filled with live entertainment, jazz bands, food stalls and silent auctions of upcycled decorations and household goods.

If Mrs Donelley and her fellow residents have anything to do with it, the afternoon will no doubt be the joyful kick –start to the festive season and she promises she’ll have the glitter cleaned up in time for Saturday.
