Attestation parade for Wing 301 recruits

Attestation parade for Wing 301 recruits

A volunteer firefighter, a sports journalist, an Army explosive ordnance disposal operator and a sailor who’s represented New Zealand internationally are among New Zealand Police’s newest recruits.

Forty new constables will be graduating at the Royal New Zealand Police College on Thursday 8 December 2016, as part of Wing 301.

They will be welcomed to their new career by wing patron Associate Professor Hon Luamanuvao Winnie Laban QSO.

The 31 male and 9 female graduating constables come from diverse backgrounds, with qualifications in everything from carpentry and veterinary nursing, to commerce and aircraft engineering.

They hail from Australia, China, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and South Korea.

As well as achieving a high level of fitness during their Police training, the sporting achievements of the recruits are impressive.

Many have represented their region or country in football, hockey, tennis, cricket, rugby or sailing.

Shane Campbell played men’s premier football in Auckland, Maree Heal played hockey and cricket for Central District, Daryl Fenemor played soccer and cricket at first division senior level and Kagan Weeks’ sailing successes include racing in New Zealand as well as representing his country overseas.

One of six recruits with existing family connections to Police, Kagan Weeks will also be competing in the World Police Sailing Championships next year with his father, uncle, brother and sister-in-law, who all work for New Zealand Police.

Six recruits have come from other roles in Police, including Stephen Eder and Vili Taukolo who both worked as authorised officers.

Two recruits have previously been part of the Armed Forces.

Bradley Parkes was a helicopter mechanic for the Airforce, while Leo Belay was an Explosive ordnance disposal operator for the Army and is still a reserve EOD operator.

Former sports journalist and newsreader Daryl Fenemor has been awarded the Minister’s Award for First in Wing and is looking forward to putting his new skills into practice in Tasman District.

“I hope to be a great policeman,” he says.

“I hope I can help make Nelson an even better place, help people in need and continue to learn.”

As patron of the wing, the Hon Luamanuvao Winnie Laban QSO is a strong leader who has provided a strong voice on community and Pasifika issues throughout her career.

In 1999, Winnie became New Zealand’s first Pacific Island female MP and then the first Pacific Island Minister of the Crown. From 2002 to 2010 she was the MP for Mana, serving as Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, and Associate Minister of Social Development, Economic Development and Trade.

After resigning from Parliament in 2010, Winnie embarked on the new position of Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Pasifila) at Victoria University of Wellington, before being honoured as a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) in 2011.

The Patron’s Award for Second in Wing goes to Constable Caillin Morris Trainor, who also won the Response Award for demonstration of safe practices and tactical skills.
