Matt Lawrey seeks Green Party candidacy for Nelson

Media Release 7th December 2016

CITY COUNCILLOR MATT LAWREY SEEKS GREEN PARTY CANDIDACY

Nelson City Councillor Matt Lawrey has announced he is seeking the candidacy of the Green Party in the Nelson electorate at next year’s General Election.

“The Green Party wants to create a country where every child can thrive and where our beautiful natural environment is treasured and protected. That’s the kind of country I want too, and I think many Nelsonians feel the same,” Mr Lawrey said.

“I believe most Kiwis think a fairer, smarter, greener New Zealand would be better for everyone and I want to be a part of making that happen.”

“I’ve been encouraged to stand by many people who think I’d do a good job so after thinking about it long and hard, I’ve decided to put my hand up.”

“The Green Party has a democratic process for selecting candidates and there may be others who seek the nomination but, if I’m chosen, it will be a real honour to represent the Greens in the community I love.”

“I want to thank everyone who has got behind me and encouraged me to take this step. All of your messages mean a lot to me,” said Mr Lawrey.

Prior to running for Nelson City Council in 2013, Mr Lawrey enjoyed an award-winning career in broadcasting and journalism. He is also the creator of The Little Things, New Zealand’s internationally successful cartoon on family life.

The Nelson branch of the Green Party will hold its candidate selection meeting on January 16 next year.
