Police acknowledge decision in Hawke's Bay assault trial

"Police acknowledge decision in Hawke's Bay assault trial"

Police notes the jury verdict regarding four officers charged with assaulting Gregory McPeake on Westshore Beach, Napier in March 2015.

“This has been an extremely difficult time for the McPeake family, the staff involved, their families and Police colleagues,” says Superintendent Sandra Venables, Eastern District Commander.

“However the public rightly expects that we, as police officers, are held to account for any actions we undertake.

“The same prosecution test under the Solicitor General’s guidelines applies for police officers, just as it does for any member of the public.

“This matter was thoroughly investigated with assistance from out-of-district staff and was subject to extensive review, with the decision being made that it should be put before the courts to make the final and independent determination.

“It is important the public has trust and confidence in police to do the right thing,” says Superintendent Venables.

“This is ultimately driven not just by our actions but also by our accountability for those actions.”

“Our staff face complex and challenging situations every day on behalf of the communities they serve,” says Superintendent Venables.

“It is important that we, as police officers, are open and transparent in every action that we take.”

An employment process is underway, and will now be progressed with the conclusion of the court process.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority was also notified of the incident when it occurred and they are making their own enquiries.

Gordon Campbell: On National’s Fantasy Trip To La La Landlord Land

How much political capital is Christopher Luxon willing to burn through in order to deliver his $2.9 billion gift to landlords? Evidently, Luxon is:
(A) unable to cost the policy accurately. As Anna Burns-Francis pointed out to him on Breakfast TV, the original ”rock solid” $2.1 billion cost he was touting to voters last year has now blown out to $2.9 billion. (That’s a 38% size error in the calculations.)
(B) unable to provide assurance that this handout won’t simply be pocketed by landlords
(C) unable to explain why Treasury (in research as recent as August 2023) wasn’t citing the loss of interest deductibility as a prime factor driving up rents.
More than anything, the Great Landlords Handout undermines the government’s alarmist talk about the state of the country’s books...
