We’re in for a Very Welly Christmas – this weekend
Wellington has supersized its Christmas celebrations, with a two-day festival – A Very Welly Christmas – this weekend transforming the annual Christmas Parade.
“This is the first year that Wellington has held a Christmas festival and it’s going to be a fantastic event for the city,” says Mayor Justin Lester.
“After a difficult few weeks for the city, A Very Welly Christmas is a chance for families to get into the Christmas spirit, come together and have a great time.”
The festival will see Lambton Quay from Stout Street to Willis Street closed for the weekend, with public transport taking alternative routes.
Deputy Mayor Paul Eagle, the Council’s Events Portfolio leader, says: “This is going to be the biggest Christmas celebration we’ve had. As well as a parade and performers, there’ll be Body FX face painting, a giant snow globe people can go inside, an ice skating rink, crafts, music, and an igloo with snow which can be made into snow balls.
“We’re also going to have Struan Ashby and the team from Tape Art NZ creating a 12-metre diameter street labyrinth for people to explore, and an augmented reality pop-up app bringing flying fantails, fireworks and dancing snowmen to the Golden Mile.”
“Wellington’s events are a big part of what gives our city its vibrancy and character. I’m really proud that this year’s Christmas Festival is making an annual tradition so much better.”
