Wellington Summit a Success
Wellington Mayor Justin Lester today held the Wellington Summit to help unite the city behind a shared vision for the future.
The summit involved over 150 attendees from local businesses, Iwi, Central Government, Non-Government Organisations, local community groups and organisations, City Council staff and councillors.
The focus was on six key areas within the Council’s influence: economy and business; transport and urban design; social and housing; arts and culture; sport and events; and the environment.
“I said I was going to get cracking from day one and this summit has offered a chance for the diverse voices in Wellington to come together, be heard and be part of creating a united plan,” said the Mayor.
"The feedback from the community was very clear. We need to get key projects around transport and housing sorted to get the city moving; we need to grow the economy and create jobs and we need to bring our whole community together to get on with the job.
“We also need to respond to the recent earthquakes and do more to prepare for the future by investing in resilience,”
Key priorities identified today were housing, a clear vision and connecting different parts of the community.
“Time and time again at today’s summit, the important of housing was raised. People across every sector and section of our community want to see action on housing, which I am making a priority as Mayor. The strong feedback from the summit today was also that people wanted to see a bold and consistent vision and they went more community connectedness.”
A draft report
on the Summit will be prepared early next year, with ideas
being worked through and incorporated into the Council’s
draft three year plan which will be consulted on in March
next year and finalised by June 2017. There are also
opportunities to get ideas from the summit into the annual
plan and ten year
plan.
