Pay rise for City Gallery security staff

12 December 2016

Christmas comes early – pay rise for City Gallery security staff

City Gallery Wellington security staff are getting an early Christmas present - they will be paid the same as Council security contractors for all hours worked.

Wellington City Council’s Living Wage Portfolio Leader, Councillor Brian Dawson, says: “Due to an anomaly, security staff at the City Gallery were being paid a lower rate for non-weekend work than the City Council rate of $18.63 an hour. That’s wrong, and I’m very pleased that it has been fixed.

“Once alerted to these issues, Council staff have acted swiftly and stepped in to find a solution.

"These are people doing important and challenging security work for our city and they deserve decent pay.

“As a Council we've committed to moving all our people to the Living Wage and I'm pleased this decision brings that a step closer."

Lyndy McIntyre of Living Wage Aotearoa said the decision is a great Christmas present for hardworking staff.

“This is going to make a real difference to staff who do the important work of keeping people safe. We’re very happy that the Council has taken this step just in time for Christmas. People who work hard for their community deserve to earn enough to support their families – no matter when in the week they do that work.”
