Absolutely Positively Wellington Award for RNZ presenter

MEDIA RELEASE
13 December 2016

RNZ presenter to receive Absolutely Positively Wellington Award

RNZ news reader Vicki McKay will receive an Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Award for her work during the recent earthquakes, Wellington Mayor Justin Lester has announced.

“Vicki won plaudits from around the world for her calmness and professionalism for continuing to read the nightly news uninterrupted even as the 14 November earthquake shook the building around her. We wanted that recognised on behalf of the city,” says the Mayor.

“Vicki had actually just started her shift and was reading the news when the earthquake hit just after midnight. She was also working the overnight shift when the first major earthquake hit Christchurch in 2010.

“Vicki has been a longstanding contributor to our public broadcaster. She began at RNZ in 1985, and has been working the overnight shift since 1995.

“This is a chance for the people of Wellington to recognise Vicki’s service and to say thank you.”

The award will be presented at the final Wellington City Council meeting of the year, tomorrow (Wednesday 14 November) in Committee Room 1, ground floor, Wellington City Council, at 9.30am.
