End of year update on Dunedin Hospital redevelopment

Media Release

14 December 2016

End of year update on the Dunedin Hospital redevelopment project

The Southern Partnership Group (SPG) is pleased with progress towards having an Indicative Business Case, with a shortlist of options for the redevelopment of Dunedin

Hospital, completed by mid-next year.

“Despite the ambitious timeframe, we’ve met our deadline to workshop the longlist of options by Christmas and are on track to have that narrowed down to a shortlist by mid next year,” SPG Chair Andrew Blair says.

“The longlist options range on a spectrum from replacing the Clinical Services Building and refurbishing or replacing the Ward Block, to moving all hospital facilities to an entirely new hospital campus either nearby or somewhere else in Dunedin City.

“As is required for public projects of this size and scale, all options for services and facilities are on the table and we will narrow this list down by weighing up each one against its ability to improve operational efficiency, the staff and patient experience, and patient safety. We’re also looking at how each option meets the business needs of the DHB, fits with the Ministry of Health’s New Zealand Health Strategy, provides value for money, recognises changing demand needs, and is affordable.

“This truly is a ground-up exercise to design future health services that meet the needs of the Southern community and the facilities to support that.

“It’s been great to see Southern DHB patients, staff and stakeholders contribute to the work needed to inform the IBC, includingdetailed services planning and exploring alternative models of care.

“The Southern DHB recognises the need to invest in primary and community care to help keep people well and out of hospital, as well as the need to reorganise the patient journey around the patient. This work continues to run in parallel to the project.”
