Highway closures – Kaikoura and Banks Peninsula/ Tai Tapu

MEDIA RELEASE

4 January 2017 | SOUTHERN REGION

Two highway closures Canterbury – Kaikoura and Banks Peninsula/ Tai Tapu

Rockfall and rain, strong winds close State Highway 1 Hundalee to Kaikoura

The NZ Transport Agency closed State Highway 1 south of Kaikoura this afternoon after 2 pm as a southerly storm moved up the Canterbury coast bringing strong winds and fresh rockfalls to the highway south of the town.

More rain is forecast to move north over Kaikoura this afternoon, so the highway between Peketa and Goose Bay is unlikely to reopen today, says Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright.

“To access Kaikoura in the meantime use Inland Route 70 between Culverden and Kaikoura, taking the turnoff at Waipara onto State Highway 7,” says Ms Wright.

State Highway 75, south of Tai Tapu, closed after serious crash

The Transport Agency has also closed State Highway 75, the Christchurch-Akaroa highway between Tai Tapu and Motukarara at 2.40 pm this afternoon after a serious crash between Macartneys Road and Duck Pond Road.

Emergency Services are on site and will direct traffic onto a detour route.
