Open-Ship-event with German Research Vessel “SONNE” on 25 January 2017

The German research vessel R/V SONNE, currently implementing scientific cruises in the New Zealand marine environment, will call port in Auckland at the end of January 2017. Commis- sioned in 2014 R/V SONNE is considered one of the most modern multi-functional science ves- sels in the world. The new flagship of the German scientific fleet regularly conducts research cruises in the South Pacific. The high-tech multi-disciplinary research vessel is equipped to cover a wide spectrum of ocean research like marine physics, geophysics, geology, chemistry, biogeochemistry and meteorology.

On Wednesday, 25 January 2017, the ship will berth at Princess Wharf East and open its doors for interested members of the public between 9.00 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. There will be no entrance fee, access to the ship will be permitted on a first come, first serve basis.

The Open-Ship-day is kick-off event for our anniversary year marking 40 years of the “German- New Zealand Science Cooperation agreement”. As part of the Open-Ship the German embassy is organizing a science fair presenting the intensive and wide-ranging cooperation of German and New Zealand scientists in the field of ocean, marine, coastal and polar research.
