Bumper weekend of arts and culture coming to Wellington

Wellington prides itself on being the cultural capital of New Zealand, and the weekend coming reinforces this idea – with something for everyone all over the city.

Wellington City Council’s Mayor, and Arts and Culture portfolio leader, Justin Lester will be attending a couple of the Council-supported events.

“There’s so much happening around the city this weekend which will really demonstrate Wellington’s culturally rich and diverse arts scene, and wide range of activities available,” he says.

One of the many highlights supported by the Council on the weekend’s calendar will be the City Gallery opening its doors for free this Saturday to all visitors to Cindy Sherman’s internationally acclaimed exhibition.

“City Gallery is excited to offer a free entry day to Cindy Sherman – it’s a great opportunity for those who may not otherwise have the chance to experience a major exhibition from one of the most influential artists living today,” says City Gallery Wellington’s Olivia Lacey.

• Chinese New Year continues with a celebration of cuisine, crafts, and cultural experiences at the TSB Bank Arena all weekend

• Theatre fans will be spoilt for choice with New Zealand’s oldest and largest Fringe Festival opening its doors at various venues around the city for the next three weeks starting tomorrow.

• The Eastern suburbs always-popular Island Bay Festival will be running over two days – with Saturdayfeaturing the parade and variety show, and Sunday’s Day in the Bay will see market stalls, entertainment, the blessing of the boats, and activities happening all around Shorland Park.

• Meanwhile, music and the sport of kings will meet at Ian Galloway Park on Saturday for the inaugural Urban Polo event. Get to see some of the world’s best polo players, enjoy a cool music line-up, food and drinks, and the always entertaining tradition of stomping the divots.
