Update on Port Hills fire – 3.30pm

Update on Port Hills fire – 3.30pm

Cordons

Authorities have reviewed the cordons for Dyers Pass Road, Victoria Park Road and Kennedys Bush Road and they have been moved back after a robust risk assessment.
· Dyers Pass Road: the cordon is now above the last house on Dyers Pass Road, so above 236 Dyers Pass Road. This means all residents in streets below these cordon points (including Longhurst Terrace and Pentre Terrace) can have access to their homes.

Victoria Park Road: there is now a cordon on Victoria Park Road above the last house on this road. Which is the entrance to Victoria Park.
Kennedys Bush Road: The cordon has been moved back so residents in houses up to, and including, houses at 299 and 304 Kennedy’s Bush Road, can now access their properties.
Police and the NZ Defence Force continue to patrol in and around the cordoned areas.

Message from the Fire Service
· Ensure facilities are safe (Gas/Electricity/Oil). If any doubt, don’t switch on and contact a qualified tradesperson
· If you suspect a gas leak call 111
· Ensure flammable materials are kept away from buildings. Keep vegetation low and tidy close to buildings. Refer here for more details
· When you get back into your property, check your smoke alarms are working and that you have an escape plan. Refer here for more details
· If there are still power cuts at your property, use BBQ’s appropriately. Do not use indoors and check for gas leaks before use. Use torches rather than naked flames.
· Keep situationally aware of what is happening around you. Check media outlets regularly for situational updates
· Refer to your council website as most areas have a total fire ban in place
