Update on Port Hills fire – 5:30pm

Update on Port Hills fire – 5:30pm

Three cordons have been moved back today, allowing residents to return to their homes. Civil Defence Controller David Adamson said there were now fewer than 150 properties remaining inside cordons. Cordons are still in place in Kennedy’s Bush Road, Hoon Hay Valley Road, Worsleys Road and Dyers Pass Road (both ends), Summit Road at Gebbies Pass, and a new one on Victoria Park Road ¬- which has allowed people access to properties further down the hill.

Unfortunately no temporary access behind the cordon will be possible today. This is because secure fire containment lines – which provide a buffer between the fire zone and residents’ houses – has not been completed. We are working hard to make this happen for residents tomorrow. We aim to get an update on the potential timing for this access is to you by 8am tomorrow.

An updated map of the cordons is available on Newsline: https://ccc.govt.nz/the-council/newsline/show/1406
