Marlborough sending more support to Port Hills
fire
Two fire crews from the Marlborough Sounds left
Marlborough this morning to relieve some of the fire
fighters who have been battling the Port Hills fire.
Eight
volunteers from Kenepuru, Okiwi Bay and Canvastown are
taking a heavy tanker south to join the crews who are still
working at the two thousand hectare fire site where
flare-ups are still a risk.
Marlborough Kaikoura principal
rural fire officer Richard McNamara says the Sounds crew
members are all highly skilled, very experienced fire
fighters who will be able to give some of the Christchurch
crews a spell as the long job of securing the fire perimeter
continues.
“We’re very pleased to be able to help
given the time they’ve had.”
Other senior fire staff
from Marlborough have been involved; as well as Mr
McNamara’s leadership role, John Foley and Trevor Tidy
have been part of the fire management team while Northbank
team leader Mary Powell and Chris Hales will also be heading
south to bolster fire management personnel from next
week.
