Marlborough recovery update: Kaikoura earthquake

Spring Creek stopbank repairs
Repairs to an earthquake-damaged stopbank at Spring Creek have been completed, and crews are midway through repairing damaged stopbanks in Grovetown. A flood watch remains in place for the Spring Creek and Grovetown communities until further notice.

Septic tank inspections
Council-subsidised inspections of earthquake-damaged septic tanks along the Flaxbourne and Ward water schemes have been completed. Property owners with concerns about earthquake damage to their septic tanks outside the water scheme areas are advised to contact their insurance companies to arrange inspections and repairs.

Slip dams
Dams caused by landslides in the Ure Valley and the Medway during the Kaikoura Earthquake will be reinspected for their stability and future risk of dam breach in March. The dams had been at risk of bursting during recent heavy rainfall.

Recovery expert to visit
Australian disaster recovery expert and clinical psychologist Dr Rob Gordon will visit Blenheim and Seddon on 13 March. He will be speaking at four meetings hosted by New Zealand Red Cross, helping people affected by the Kaikoura Earthquake and aftershocks to understand their reactions to trauma and grief, with practical tips to help people and their families recover from the earthquakes.

The meetings are:
10.30am – 12.30pm Community agencies
1.30pm – 3.30pm First responders
4 – 6pm School & preschool teachers
7 – 9pm Community (Awatere Memorial Hall)

With the exception of the Community session in Seddon, the meetings will be held at the Red Cross Service Centre, 33 Redwood Street, Blenheim.
