Live events pump up the volume

Step into a recording studio, spin the decks or sing a classic Kiwi song at New Zealand’s largest-ever music exhibition, Volume: Making Music in Aotearoa. Since October 2016, Volume has been turning visitors into rock stars, DJ’s, dancers and producers.

This year, there’s more. Amplifying across Auckland until 21 May 2017, you can discover free live events and performances at Auckland Council art centres.

Get into the groove and meet local musicians; watch them perform at album launches, let them teach you how to beat a drum and be inspired by their diversity of dance.

The variety is endless, but don’t miss these two hot picks:

Discover the myths and legends of ancient Tonga with Auckland-based group Pukepuke o’ Tonga.

Bringing back original sounds and melodies, their invigorating performance breathes new life into the poetry of late Queen Salote Topou III.

On 8 April at Mangere Arts Centre, members of the Tongan royal family will bless the official launch and first-ever live performance of Lomipeau Aotearoa, an album recording to revive and preserve traditional Tongan music and movement.

Watch young Māori artists from the Pao Pao Pao Māori mentoring programme; perform their original waiata to showcase their exciting new compilation album on 13 April at Te Oro in Glenn Innes.

Councillor Efeso Collins, Chair of the Community Development & Safety Committee, says: “Volume is a landmark exhibition that appeals to music lovers of all ages and all cultures.

“We’re spreading the music of our people across Auckland with eight live events, each tailored specifically to local communities. So, dive into the magic of music in Aotearoa and discover free live events at your local arts centre.”
