Aucklanders singing in the rain while being
waterwise!
The City of Sails (and umbrellas) may
be receiving a good drenching this autumn but that hasn’t
stopped Aucklanders from treating water as a precious
resource. Yesterday, the city’s total water use was 404
million litres – only fractionally above the target of 400
million litres or less.
Watercare recognises that it
may seem unusual to ask everyone to reduce their water use
when it’s bucketing down with rain. But the city’s
largest water treatment plant is operating at reduced
capacity at the moment because of large amounts of silt in
the Hunua Dams, following the Tasman Tempest on 7-8 March.
More than 40 electronic display signs have been put
up all over the region to remind everyone to save 20 litres
per day. The locations are changed frequently, so that
motorists don’t become used to seeing the same notice each
day.
