Tiny Huts to stay in New Brighton

#MyBrightonHut, designed by Marike Uys and built by Miles Construction

The fun loving and creative architecture of the five Tiny Huts will continue to be enjoyed in New Brighton with the community voting to keep them right where they are.

Kim Money, Chair of the Coastal–Burwood Community Board says, “The decision is really easy when you get such a great response from the community and comments saying they are beautiful, gorgeous and they brighten up New Brighton. They are another unique drawcard for visitors to New Brighton.”

The Huts were originally designed and built to be a temporary feature over the 2016/17 summer season, but the Coastal–Burwood Community Board decided that the community should choose their future. Now that the community has voted to keep the Tiny Huts longer, plans for their maintenance beyond the summer season will be made.

Out of a total of 478 votes, 82 percent of voters wanted the Tiny Huts to stay.

The options voted on were to:

Stay – keep them where they are currently located

Move and cluster – remove them from current locations, and place them together in a new location

Move and store – Remove them and place in storage for future summer reuse

Auction – sell four huts, with proceeds from auction to be spent at the discretion of the Community Board

Carolyn Ingles, Head of Urban Design, Urban Regeneration & Heritage says, “A number of local people have put a lot of time into this project and the strong support from the community shows how much that has been appreciated.”
