Asking LGNZ for legal opinion on living wage a sensible move

Asking LGNZ for legal opinion on living wage a sensible move, says Chamber

The decision by Greater Wellington Regional Council to ask Local Government NZ (LGNZ) for a legal opinion over the payment of the living wage to contractors is a sensible one, says Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

Chief Executive John Milford says the chamber agrees with the move.

“This issue needs to be sorted for once and for all, for the benefit of councils up and down the country, so LGNZ is the logical place to go.

“In fact, I would suggest that LGNZ, on behalf of the sector, could go even further and seek a statutory declaration on the matter that would give definitive guidance to councils.

“And if LGNZ can’t help then perhaps central government should look at it. Councils need guidance on this issue.”
