Engineers closely monitoring Marlborough’s stop banks

Several river stop banks in Marlborough were damaged by the Kaikoura earthquake. Stop banks at Spring Creek, the Lower Diversion and Grovetown were affected.

Over the summer, Marlborough District Council engineers fixed the major damage to the stop banks in Spring Creek and at the Grovetown Lagoon, and are working to finish the rest of the work as soon as possible.

Until this work is completed, properties beside some stop banks remain at greater risk of being exposed to flooding.

Geoff Dick, Rivers Engineer, says Council engineers are keeping a close eye on river levels.

“The good news is we have no cause for concern at this stage. With the forecast rainfall tomorrow afternoon (Thursday), river levels could increase.

“We will keep a close eye on all our rivers and immediately advise the public if we think there is any risk whatsoever.”
