March 2017 Monthly traffic update

6.6%Auckland Airport’s international passengers (excluding transits) for the month of March increased by 6.6% to 834,781 in 2017. The 52,000 passenger increase on March 2016 was driven by increased capacity on Asia/Middle East routes (+40,000 pax), and the Americas (+23,000 pax). The later timing of Easter, in April this year compared to late March in 2017, led to a decline on Tasman routes in March (-13,000 pax), which will be offset by higher April 2017 traffic.-7.1%Auckland Airport’s visitor arrivals from Australia were down 7.1% in March 2017. The decrease was related to the later timing of Easter and school holidays. School holidays in some Australian states are timed to coincide with Easter, and as a result fell in April this year compared to March in 2016. This was also the reason for a decrease in visitor arrivals from the UK (down 6.4%) and Hong Kong (down 17.8%) in March 2017.
14.9%Auckland Airport’s visitor arrivals from Germany were up 14.9% in March 2017. March is the 11th consecutive month that we have seen year-on-year growth for German visitors. Germany is our second largest European market after the UK and is the sixth largest source of visitors to Auckland, with 77,956 visitors in the year ended March 2017 - a 15.3% increase on prior year. The increase in one-stop connectivity to Europe has facilitated this growth including new Middle East and China capacity and increased frequency on Thailand and Hong Kong services.

-15.1%Mackay Airport’s passengers were down 15.1% in March 2017 due to the three day airport shutdown during Cyclone Debbie. Domestic passenger volumes at Cairns Airport were also 1.4% lower in March 2017 due to the later timing of Easter this year. This domestic decrease was mostly offset by international passenger growth (up 4.6%), including 33,000 passengers on the Osaka and Tokyo routes, the highest reported number of monthly passengers on Cairns-Japan services since 2005. Air New Zealand’s seasonal Auckland-Cairns service returned this month, with an 11% increase in capacity expected over the 2017 season, including the launch of the B787-900 Dreamliner on this route.
