Upper Hutt School students inspired by LUX Light Festival

A class of 15 Upper Hutt School students have created a light installation inspired by the Circus.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 08 MAY 2017—Upper Hutt will be lighting up for LUX Light Festival from 12 – 21 May with the help of a group of creative Upper Hutt School students. LUX is a celebration of light, colour, and sound with over 30 light installations across the region showcasing local and international talent.

For the first time, five schools around the region have been involved in the festival through the LUX Kids Programme. Students from the schools have been working hard on their very own light installation to be set up in their city or town centre during the LUX Festival, learning about electronics and light elements. Each installation will be inspired by one of five precincts, each with a unique theme that will include light installations as well as fun and exciting activations.

Fifteen students from Upper Hutt School have been working with the Circus precinct, coming up with an installation that showcased their favourite things about the circus.

“For the past 5 weeks we’ve been planning a sculpture out of lights and recycled materials. We are doing a lion dressed as a clown, juggling,” says Genna, one of the students building the sculpture.

LUX is sponsored in part by the Wellington Region Amenities Fund—a partnership between Wellington City Council, Hutt City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Kāpiti Coast District Council, and Porirua City Council.

“We are proud to support events such as LUX that bring big city events into our back yards,” says Wayne Guppy, Mayor of Upper Hutt and Chair of the Wellington Region Amenities Fund. “Growing our economy, connecting our regions, and getting our communities involved is why we have funds like this.”

Upper Hutt School’s installation will be located in the window display at Something Crafty, 131 Main Street. Students, friends, and family are welcome to see the sculpture be turned on for the first time at 6.00 pm on Thursday 11 May.

LUX is on in Wellington from May 12 – 21, 6.00 – 11.00 pm nightly. Entry is free, and there will be food for sale at the event. You can also visit LUX Kids sculptures in Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, and Porirua city centres, and Otaki town centre throughout the festival.
