Changes to Tucker Beach Road Intersection

Queenstown Lakes District Council Mayor Jim Boult is delighted NZTA has responded to his repeated concerns around a busy State Highway Intersection. Significant safety improvements are on the way for drivers and residents who use Queenstown’s Tucker Beach Road to get onto State Highway 6.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has today announced that they are going to investigate the existing link beneath the Shotover River Bridge to make it easier and safer for people driving from Tucker Beach Road toward Frankton. They will be looking to confirm funding for a detailed business case in July and could potentially tender for construction work in October this year.

In the interim they are reducing the speed limit on State Highway 6 from Stalker Road to Hardware Lane in Frankton from 100km/h to 80km/h.

Mayor Boult welcomed the announcement, and acknowledged the Transport Agency’s response to address this challenging intersection. “I have regularly raised residents’ concerns regarding this dangerous stretch of road and it is encouraging to see a link using the underpass beneath SH6 is being actively investigated. I’ve made it clear that this is the best option to address this intersection, and it is pleasing to see the Transport Agency have taken this on board.”

“While I certainly support a speed reduction as an interim measure, I look forward to working closely with our counterparts at the Transport Agency on a safe, permanent solution.”
