Arrest made in joint Customs and Police investigation

Following a joint investigation between Police and Customs, a Palmerston North man has been arrested for the importation of drugs into New Zealand.

Earlier this week New Zealand Customs intercepted a package at the Auckland International Mail Centre destined for the Palmerston North illicit-drug market, which contained a quantity of methamphetamine.

Police executed search warrants in Palmerston North yesterday and today, resulting in the discovery of a methamphetamine laboratory.

A 40-year-old man is appearing in the Palmerston North District Court today charged with importing a Class A controlled drug, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

“We believe the drugs were sourced through the man’s contacts in South East Asia,” said Detective Steve Field, of the Manawatu Organised Crime Unit.

“Our strong partnership with Customs provides us with opportunities to act on information we receive and dismantle organised criminal networks operating within our city”.

“This drug destroys families and communities, and the social cost is significant”.

“People involved in the methamphetamine trade remain a top priority for us, and we are committed to ensuring they are caught and held accountable for their actions.”

The joint investigation is still ongoing, and further charges may be laid against the man.

Police urge anyone with information about drug manufacturing or supply rings to contact their local Police station, or to report anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
