The
BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to a remote area
of the Te Urewera National Park near Galatea, late on Sunday
afternoon after reports came in that two male hunters were
lost and one was injured in the bush.
The BayTrust Rescue
Helicopter flew to the location with a Paramedic and two
Police SAR team members to locate and extract the
pair.
Due to poor weather with low cloud and rain, the
helicopter could not locate at the high point where the pair
were waiting. With fading light the two SAR members were
winched in using The Southern Trust rescue hoist and they
spent a wet and cold night with the men.
At first light on
Monday morning the helicopter was able to get to the
location where the group were, and hoist them all to safety.
The two local men aged in their early 20’s were in good
spirits upon returning to their
vehicle.
