Further information sought on SH5 house fire

At approximately 2:45am on Friday 17 March, 2017, there was a fatal house fire on State Highway 5, near the Rangitaiki Tavern between Taupo and Napier.

Three people died.

As part of the investigation, Police would like to speak to a man seen standing on the side of the highway near this area during the early hours of the Friday morning.

Police understand that he pulled his car over on the side of the highway, possibly after his car had broken down.

As part of our enquiries, Police would like to speak to this person or anyone who may have offered assistance to him between 1am and 3am on Friday 17 March, 2017.

The family of the deceased have requested that media do not contact them at this time and that they be allowed to grieve in private.

While the matter is in its final of stages of investigation, no further information is available at this time.
