QLDC charged under RMA

QLDC charged under RMA

On Friday 25 August Queenstown Lakes District Council was served with a summons in relation to a charge laid by the Otago Regional Council. QLDC has been charged with an offence under section 338 of the Resource Management Act (1991), for the discharge of contaminants (wastewater) onto land which could have resulted in those contaminants entering water.

The alleged offence took place on 20 and 21 February 2017 on land near the Kawarau River following an overflow from the wastewater system. QLDC’s contractors attended to the discharge once notified of it by the Harbourmaster and informed the Regional Council. QLDC has cooperated with the Regional Council throughout its investigation and anticipated some form of enforcement action being undertaken.

A first appearance hearing is scheduled to take place at Queenstown District Court on 18 September 2017. As the matter is now before the Court, Queenstown Lakes District Council will make no further media comment pertaining to this matter.
