Bad weather overnight – apartments evacuated, slips and trees down, a need for caution

Persistent rain and winds overnight have brought down slips and trees in various parts of Wellington – and commuters are asked to take care on their way to work this morning.

Main points:
· A block of flats in Aro Street, between Devon Street and Adams Terrace, has been evacuated after a large slip has come down from a steep hillside behind it.
· The Pass of Branda road between Seatoun and Breaker Bay remains closed by a large slip.
· Slips and trees have come down on Chaytor Street, Karori and Homebush Road, Khandallah – and both important commuter routes are partially blocked.
· Ngaio Gorge Road is partially blocked by a small slip about 300 metres down from Kenya Street (near the top of the gorge).
· Motorists are advised to take alternative routes to avoid delays.
