Shelly Bay public submissions published

Public submissions have been published today on the proposed sale and lease of Wellington City Council land at Shelly Bay to enable the development of housing and public space.

About 1000 people and organisations aired their views in the four-week consultation.

The Council granted resource consent in April this year to Shelly Bay Limited - a joint venture between Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust (PNBST) and developers The Wellington Company – to build 350 new homes in Shelly Bay and develop public spaces and facilities including a waterfront walkway, parks, cafes, bars, shops, a microbrewery and a boutique hotel.

PNBST bought about eight hectares of land at Shelly Bay as part of a Treaty of Waitangi settlement in 2009. The Council owns 3.5 hectares of land at Shelly Bay, mainly along the waterfront.

The proposal is for the Council to sell 0.3 hectares of land to Shelly Bay Ltd for housing and to lease, for 125 years, 0.6 hectares of land and two buildings on the waterfront to Shelly Bay Ltd for public space and commercial/retail activities.

Councillors will listen to submissions from more than 100 people at the oral hearings about the Shelly Bay proposal next week - on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 September.
