Free bus travel for AIMS Games

Free bus travel for AIMS Games

6 September 2017

Take the bus!

That’s the message to Anchor AIMS Games athletes, coaches, referees and supporters as the week-long tournament kicks off in Tauranga on Sunday, September 10th.

With over 10,000 athletes descending on Tauranga, Bay of Plenty Regional Council have again committed to providing free travel on all Tauranga Bayhopper buses to those with an official AIMS Games wristband in an effort to combat congestion during the annual sporting extravaganza.

As well as the free Bayhopper buses, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Tauranga City Council have joined forces to provide a free park and ride service that runs between ASB Baypark, Baywave, Links Avenue Reserve, Blake Park and Mount Maungaanui Hot Pools. The service runs every 30 minutes and is free for everyone.

“With over 10,000 competitors plus supporters, officials, friends and whanau, an event as big as ours can be tricky with the influx of traffic but this is an ideal way to address it,” Tournament Director Vicki Semple explained.

“We’re stoked to have Bayhopper and Bay of Plenty Regional Council on board again this year offering free travel to those with official Anchor AIMS Games wristbands and the free park and ride from Baypark is another fantastic option, not just for athletes but for the public too. It helps ease congestion and is a cool way for teams to travel together and experience the real buzz of the tournament.”

Providing transport options is important says Public Transport Committee Chairman Lyall Thurston.
